Jens Bjerregaard (DK)

Artistic Director of Koreografisk Center Archauz® and Mancopy© Dansekompagni, Choreographer, and Dancer

Jens Bjerregaard has consistently followed his own direction, in spite of trends and fashions. He is extremely conscious of form. His language is playful, yet sophisticated, and he constantly challenges himself and his dancers – both in his choice of music and artistic approach. He was trained in dance and choreography at the Laban Centre of Music and Dance, London (1989-1992), and is among the few choreographers in Denmark who consistently practices dance as an abstract, non-theatrical expression. Bjerregaard is best described as an architect of movement, with a natural instinct for structure, often inspired by contemporary art and design. His style is often spellbinding and displays a certain ‘Scandinavian feel’, founded on a consciousness of form and good design.

In 1998 Bjerregaard and a group of professional dancers established the experimental ensemble ‘Urban Elves’ – the ensemble won several international awards for choreography and was continually sponsored by the Danish Arts Agency, due to the quality of their productions. In 2005, he founded Mancopy Dansekomagni, and in 2007, he founded Koreografisk Center Archauz, which has since been under his artistic direction. Since founding Mancopy and Archauz, Bjerregaard has furthered both the artistic ability of Mancopy, by creating a more versatile company, as well as the visionary direction of Archauz, by developing programmes for young dancers and choreographers, creating residencies for artists, and by cultivating diversity in dance in Denmark.
