Swee Boon Kuik (SG)

Choreographer, Pellucid from Now

Artistic director  and choreographer of T.H.E Dance Company (The Human Expression Dance Company) in Singapore and former principal dancer of Compania Nacional de Danza (CND) in Spain, Swee Boon Kuik has collaborated with Nacho Duato as well as several other renown choreographers, including Jiri Kylian, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, and Wim Vandekeybus.

Before leaving for Europe in 2002, Kuik spent 11 years in the Singapore Dance Theatre, dancing principal roles in many full-length performances, such as Giselle, Coppelia, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Anna Karenina, The Red Shoes, Cinderella, and Romeo and Juliet. Kuik’s exceptional artistry brought him a nomination in 2003 for the Benois De La Danse Award, an annual international ballet competition. In 2007, he was awarded one of the most prestigious arts awards in Singapore - the Young Artist Awards from the National Arts Council.

In 2006, Kuik presented Somewhere… we hear at Forwards Moves at the Singapore Arts Festival 2006. It was well-received, and he was subsequently commissioned by the National Arts Council to choreograph a new work, Silence (excerpt), for the 8th Asian Arts Festival in Beijing, China. Silence was further developed into a full-length work in 2007 as a commission for the Esplanade Theatre at the Esplanade Da:ns Festival 2007. It was well received by audiences and critics, and was rated one of the top five dance performances in Singapore in 2007.

In September 2008, Kuik founded T.H.E Dance Company. The company’s inaugural full-length work was Old Sounds, commissioned by the Singapore National Heritage Board. Kuik created a more recent work, Water Bloom, commissioned for the opening of the National University Singapore Arts Festival 2009.

Tim Feldmann (DK)

Choreographer, InkZ

As one of the first recognized Danish contemporary choreographers, Tim Feldmann has been credited for bringing an international focus to Danish contemporary dance. We haven’t seen his work in Denmark for several years now because he has taken up residence in Miami, Florida and has switched focus to other aspects of the physical body. Therefore his contribution to InkZ is a comeback for him, an exciting reunion for Mancopy, and very relevant for Danish dance in general. The raw and contemporary form exhibited in Feldmann’s Hendrix House, among others of his  works, makes him the right match for InkZ’s narrative of the raw art expressed through graffiti.

Tim Feldmann is known for combining dance with other art forms, creating an exciting personal style with a powerful physical and convuluted storytelling. With his original and innovative voice, Feldmann pushes the limits of ”contemporary art” with wacky humour and dramatic constellations.

Tim Feldmann’s earlier works include Twin-Project (1996) and Ikon #1 (1997), together with his reknown solo Ø (1997), Skizo (1999) and On Rose (2000). He has also created works for the British Ricochet Dance Company (1998), Greek Sine Qua Non (1998), New Danish Dance Theatre (2000), Swedish Skånes Dance Theatre (2001), among others.

Tomomi Yamauchi (JP)

Choreographer, InkZ

Though her passport is Japanese, Tomomi Yamauchi is one of the new, young ”Danish” choreographers absolutely worth paying attention to. Born in 1971 in Nagoya, Japan, Yamauchi was trained at the The Danish National School of Contemporary Dance in 1999. Since then, she has become indispensable to the Danish dance community as person, dancer, choreographer and teacher. She has danced with many Danish companies and choreographers, among them Corona Danseteater, Åben Dans, Rasmussens Garderobeshow, Helle Bach, Signa Sørensen, Lars Dahl Pedersen and Tali Razga.

As a choreographer, Yamauchi has gained distinction for her strong aesthetic expression and a sense for the subtle and surprising. In 2001, she won Dansolution with her choreography Under Heaven and has since choreographed Treasure Hunters, Flying Fish, and most recently Lemon Soda for Dansescenen’s Junior Company.

Yamauchi has a rare sense for the visual aesthetic, and with minimalism and cunning, she creates snapshots on the stage that stick in our minds. This makes her the ideal choice for a project like InkZ.  She also fulfills Mancopy’s purpose of providing space and opportunities for young Danish choreographers. Yamauchi’s work with Mancopy contributes significantly to the development of both Mancopy and the Danish dance community.

Johan Ohlson (SE)

Dancer, Out of Hauz Experiences vol. 2, Rite

Johan Ohlson (SE) was born and raised in Värnamo, Sweden. During graduate school he played a lot of sports, such as swimming and tennis, but did not start dancing until later on. In 2001 he began studying at the University of Technology in Gothenburg Sweden. At the same time, he took his first dance class. Soon realizing that dancing offered something technology could not, he took a year off from studying to focus entirely on dancing. The following year he was admitted to the Ballet Academy in Gothenburg. Johan graduated in the spring of 2008. During school he performed in Gothenburg and around Sweden, both as a dancer and with a short piece choreographed by himself. After graduating, he worked for three months at the Gothenburg Opera before joining Mancopy in January 2009.

Katri Siipola (FI)

Dancer, Out of Hauz Experiences vol. 2, Rite

Katri Siipola (FI) trained at the Finnish National Opera Ballet School. After graduating as a professional dancer in 2001, she worked in Grasse, France for Europa Danse, performing works of choreographers such as Jose Montalvo & Dominique Hervieu, Mats Ek and Nacho Duato. After that she danced in Germany with Aalto Ballett Theater Essen and Ballet Dresden, Semperoper Dresden (2002-2005) dancing in various ballets from f.ex John Neumeier, Uwe Scholtz and Vladimir Derevianko.

In 2005, Katri joined Tivoli Pantomime Ballet in Copenhagen where she danced lead roles in various fairytale ballets such as Thumbelina and The Tinder Box (choreographed by Dinna Bjørn in collaboration with HM Queen Margrethe II), The Little Match Girl (Louise Midjord, Royal Danish Ballet) She also performed traditional Danish pantomimes and danced with the Royal Danish Opera.  In 2008, Katri was a guest artist with Dansk Danseteater performing in Tim Rushton and Michael Kvium´s Passion. Jens Bjerregaard (DK)

Artistic Director of Koreografisk Center Archauz® and Mancopy© Dansekompagni, Choreographer, and Dancer

Jens Bjerregaard has consistently followed his own direction, in spite of trends and fashions. He is extremely conscious of form. His language is playful, yet sophisticated, and he constantly challenges himself and his dancers – both in his choice of music and artistic approach. He was trained in dance and choreography at the Laban Centre of Music and Dance, London (1989-1992), and is among the few choreographers in Denmark who consistently practices dance as an abstract, non-theatrical expression. Bjerregaard is best described as an architect of movement, with a natural instinct for structure, often inspired by contemporary art and design. His style is often spellbinding and displays a certain ‘Scandinavian feel’, founded on a consciousness of form and good design.

In 1998 Bjerregaard and a group of professional dancers established the experimental ensemble ‘Urban Elves’ – the ensemble won several international awards for choreography and was continually sponsored by the Danish Arts Agency, due to the quality of their productions. In 2005, he founded Mancopy Dansekomagni, and in 2007, he founded Koreografisk Center Archauz, which has since been under his artistic direction. Since founding Mancopy and Archauz, Bjerregaard has furthered both the artistic ability of Mancopy, by creating a more versatile company, as well as the visionary direction of Archauz, by developing programmes for young dancers and choreographers, creating residencies for artists, and by cultivating diversity in dance in Denmark.

Born in France, Dominique Porte studied dance at the Conservatoire in Avignon and at the Centre national de danse contemporaine in Angers. She has studied under, among others, Dominique Petit, Dominique Bagouet, Norio Yoshida and Aaron Osborne. In 1989, drawn by the excitement prevailing in the Quebec dance community, she moved to Montreal, dancing with such choreographers as Marie Chouinard, William Douglas and José Navas.

Her continued interest for the solo form led her to her first experience with choreography in 1993. Her first creation, Codine, which she herself performed, was presented at Tangente in Montreal as well as in Venezuela. The promising young choreographer continued to explore the solo with Volte-Face (1994), Ne marchez pas sur le concret (1995), À Double sens (1996) and Déviation (1997). Déviation was selected for the 1997-1998 Dance Roads tour, a network of European presenters who promote young choreographers and their work. Dominique Porte’s works traveled to Europe and to New York, and she created successively Sautes d’humeur (1998) and 7 Gouttes et des poussières (1998). “Porte is not only adding works to her repertory, she is also multiplying her successes.” Le Devoir, Montreal

In August 1999, she created a structure for her work with the company Système D/Dominique Porte. As a performer, she is noted for her incredible energy and quick-spiritedness, her precision and her virtuosity; these qualities lend her choreography an undeniably sharp style that marries abstraction and emotion, formal logic and reversal, passages with clearly drawn edges and movements that curve and undulate.

A new creation by Dominique Porte is an event not to be missed — as well as the opportunity to see her perform. These opportunities are, fortunately, plentiful; as Dominique lends herself to a variety of choreographic experiences. In 1997, the Orford Arts Centre invited her to create her first group work, a quintet set to music by Gyorgy Ligeti. Performed with the musicians present on stage, De 1 à 6 was a universal success. “...The level of integration achieved by the French-born choreographer Dominique Porte was astonishing, as was the vitality of five young dancers from home and abroad.” The Gazette, Montreal. In July 2000, the Orford Arts Centre asked her to create another piece, this time set to Chopin’s studies and preludes.

Since 1999, she has been guest choreographer on a number of projects. Responding to a series of commissions, she created successively: Petite histoire sans (1999), Voyage (2000) for LADMMI (les Ateliers de danse moderne de Montréal); Solitudes for the company Montréal-Danse (2000); and a solo for dancer Liza Kovacs (Seule et Liza) for a project at Danse-Cité.

In addition to her projects with her own company, her choreographic signature could be seen at the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault for the project Danse et Lumière, at Danse-Cité with a duo for Anne LeBeau and a solo for herself (Projet Michel F. Côté, May 2003), as well as the Studio at l’Agora de la danse when the Korean group Laboratory Dance Project (LDP) presented her quartet Solitudes in January 2003.In November 2002, in the context of the Pépinières européennes, the Theater Academy of Helsinki invited her to create and present Up & Down, a work for twelve of the graduating students co-produced by the Aleksanterin Teatteri. Back at Danse-Cité,  she created the solo From Zero for dancer Susan Elliott as part of the evening Social Studies (January 2005).

In the winter of 2005, she received a travel grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for a six-week trip to India for research and inspiration.

During the 2006-2007 season, Dominique Porte has been invited to teach a workshop at Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts in Bangalore, India.  She also taught at the Département de danse de l'UQÀM and at l'École de danse de Québec and gave training classes to professionals dancers members of the Regroupement québécois de la danse.  Finally, a 2-weeks intensive workshop in the context of Transformation Danse, in Montreal, allowed to Dominique Porte to pursue her teaching activities with about 20 professional dancers from coast to coast.

Kim Helweg (DK)

Composer Nothing Florid, RAUM

Kim Helweg began composing at the age of 13 and made his professional debut in 1974 with the composition “A Little Wind Quintet” at a concert for alternative music.

The first published work by Kim Helweg, HVIDHEDEN OG STILHEDEN (The Whiteness and the Silence) from 1975, shows clearly which composers have influenced his formative years – namely John Cage and Penderecki. The composition is a blank page – has no duration, no instrumentation and no indication that tells us whether it is supposed to be regarded as a piece of music, a poem or anything else. Other pages came soon after, using “graphic notation” to be conceived freely as pictures of music or music of pictures. A “Tabular Rasa” as it might be and at the same time a very early musical turning point.

The blank Page was followed by “real heavy sound”. A chance encounter with American fusion-music drastically altered his course and led to an extended period of jazz/rock compositions culminating in two jazz/rock symphonies and the rock-operas Ulysses (1982) and Black Mass (1983).Compositions that connected the idioms of jazz and rock with the classical composition technique.

In 2003 Kim Helweg wrote the Partita I-VI. The 6 Partitas are actually one long piece (90 min.). The piece was cut into 5 smaller pieces and one long for practical reasons. The year 2003 decided the title, the deadlines decided the length, and the commissioner decided the instrumentation. The 6 “fragments” became 3 pieces for piano solo, one string quartet, one piece for 2 pianos and percussion and a concerto for viola, double bass and electronics. The last one was written for the Dance performance “Shaved, Plucked and Moisturized” by Jens Bjerregaard.

Among the later works are“Nothing Florid” 2005, written for a Dance performance by Jens Bjerregaard and his new company: Mancopy – Odense danse Kompagni.

Characteristically for her style is an intellectual and sensitive undertone which motivates her and from which her interest in movement and the dancing body springs. With great clarity Cristina Caprioli shows us the dancing body as an endless source of realization. She celebrates dance as the art form, where a philosophical tension arises between body and mind. Her work exists in the gap between movement and thought. Details, complexity and clarity are the bearing elements in the aesthetics of Cristina Caprioli’s as well as the tightness and austerity of her compositional structures.
